The CBC (Congressional Black Caucus) supports the federalizing of airport screeners. This is very confusing. These are the same people that have complained about how blacks are treated by airport security, by police, by the FBI,CIA and IRS. Their solution...to create another federal police force with authority to harass African-Americans. This is just more proof that the Democratic party is more important than their community.
Holiday Seatbelt Crackdown by Fed Labeled a 'Waste' -- 11/22/2001
More out of control government interference into our lives. Where does it stop?
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is asking more than 10,000 police departments in all 50 states to use roadblocks, checkpoints and unmarked patrol cars to check for seat belt violators. The program is called Operation ABC Mobilization, "America Buckles Up Children." However, the Libertarian Party says the program is misguided, especially at this time.
"The federal government has warned us that murderous terrorists could strike again at any time. So why are police resources being diverted to stop, harass, ticket or arrest ordinary Americans who forget to wear a seatbelt?" Steve Dasbach, the party's national director, asked.
"It is an absolute outrage that at a time when terrorists have killed 5,000 Americans - and threaten to kill more - the highest priority of law enforcement seems to be setting up random checkpoints in all 50 states to crack down on seatbelt violators," Dasbach said.

New York's Dominicans: A Community in Mourning Many in Washington Heights feel that while the media has made much of Far Rockaway's tragedy — prior to being the site of Flight 587's crash, the community had lost 75 residents, mostly police officers and firefighters, in the WTC disaster — not enough attention has been paid to the losses in New York's Dominican neighborhoods. Washington Heights, residents point out, also lost people on 9/11, at least 44 by one count.

VICTORY SHIFTS THE MUSLIM WORLD By DANIEL PIPES
EARLY on Nov. 9, the Taliban regime ruled almost 95 percent of Afghanistan. Ten days later, it controlled just 15 percent of the country. Key to this quick disintegration was the fact that, awed by American air power, many Taliban soldiers switched sides to the U.S.-backed Northern Alliance.
"Pakistani holy warriors are deserting Taliban ranks and streaming home in large numbers," reported The Associated Press on Friday. In the streets of Peshawar, we learn, "portraits of Osama bin Laden go unsold. Here where it counts, just across the Khyber Pass from the heartland of Afghanistan, the Taliban mystique is waning."
Seems they did not really want to die.

And yet, it's not even those Jalalabad warriors that have made the last week's events so troubling, but the growing appreciation of just how ruthless and ambitious the US is likely to become in its war against terrorism. What the events of the past few days have starkly revealed is that the US had only one interest in this war in Afghanistan, capturing Bin Laden and destroying al-Qaida; that imperative outstripped all considerations of Afghanistan's future.

DAVE KOPEL on how Osama bin Laden's efforts are backfiring:InstaPundit.Com
Yet bin Laden is turning out to have far fewer allies than he expected. His dream of precipitating the fall of Middle Eastern governments may come true. But it now appears that the modernizing, secular military government of Pakistan may be in less danger of toppling than the Islamic theocracy of Iran. And yes, the House of Saud may fall — but the reason may be that Americans finally decide to remove the terrorist world's leading source of money.
The middle east will become more American and secular.

This week’s NYT Magazine has a good piece about Al Jazeera: .What the Muslim World Is Watching
Compared with other Arab media outlets, Al Jazeera may be more independent -- but it is also more inflammatory. For the dark side of the pan-Arab worldview is an aggressive mix of anti-Americanism and anti-Zionism, and these hostilities drive the station's coverage, whether it is reporting on the upheaval in the West Bank or on the American raids on Kandahar. Although Al Jazeera has sometimes been hailed in the West for being an autonomous Arabic news outlet, it would be a mistake to call it a fair or responsible one. Day in and day out, Al Jazeera deliberately fans the flames of Muslim outrage.
